Validation Requirements

Domain Validated SSL certificates are the most basic, entry-level digital certificate option and are the easiest to validate. The process includes a single step to verify the person or organization who owns the registered domain.

To complete the validation, the domain owner must prove that they own the domain that was submitted with the order before issuance can occur. These certificates provide core functionality for securing websites, making them ideal for small businesses or internal projects.

DV Multi-Domain Validation

Domain Validated SSL certificates provide a straightforward validation process, requiring only a single step to confirm the ownership of the registered domain(s) by the individual or organization.

To complete the validation, the domain owner must prove to the certificate authority (CA) that they own the fully qualified domain name or names that were submitted with the order.

Preferred Validation Method

Best Practice: DNS-Based DCV (Recommended)

We strongly recommend using DNS-based validation. It’s secure, reliable, and easier to automate in preparation for shorter certificate lifespans. There are two supported DNS-based options:

1. DNS CNAME-based DCV
A CNAME record is added to your DNS pointing to a validation target provided by the certificate authority.

2. DNS TXT-based DCV (Random Value Method)
You’ll add a TXT record containing a random value to your domain’s DNS. The record should follow this format:

Name: _pki-validation.your-domain.com
Type: TXT
Value: <random_value_provided>

The random value is unique to your order and valid for 30 days. Once added, Sectigo will check for the presence of the TXT record to confirm domain control.

Alternative: Email-Based DCV (Pre-Approved Addresses Only)

Email-based authentication remains supported but is now limited to the following pre-approved addresses. WHOIS-based email addresses are no longer accepted as of June 15, 2025:

We will send an authorization email to one of these addresses. Once you respond and confirm ownership, the certificate can be issued within minutes of a completed order.

Alternative Methods of Validation

If the email Domain Validation does not work for your particular situation, there are alternative methods.

File-Based Authentication – we will provide you with a text file that you will need to upload to the root directory of your website. This will then be verified by us via HTTP or HTTPS.
CNAME-Based Authentication – we will provide you with two unique hash values (these are MD5 and SHA1). You, in turn, must enter them in your CNAME DNS record.

DV SSL certificates provide the fastest, easiest way to secure a domain name. Once domain ownership verification has been completed, the certificate can be issued. Due to the lack of organization vetting, DV certificates are not recommended for eCommerce sites or sites that collect sensitive information.
